There are plenty of ways to enjoy winter in Duluth, from a range of cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails to a few downhill skiing and snowboarding hills. Our favorite place to send guests in the winter, though, is Spirit Mountain in Duluth. Though Spirit Mountain Duluth offers some really great skiing during the winter (and other activities during the summer), arguably one of the best things about it is its proximity to town! It’s only a quick 15-minute drive from our Bed and Breakfast in Duluth – which translates to way more time on the slopes for you!
After a tiring but fun day in the snow, there’s no place better to put your feet up than our romantic Bed and Breakfast in Duluth. Soak your tired muscles in our whirlpool tubs, curl up in front of a fire, and sink into opulence at the A.G. Thomson House Bed and Breakfast. With ski season at Spirit Mountain in Duluth set to start soon, now is the perfect time to book your ski vacations for the 2020-2021 season.
A Day at Spirit Mountain in Duluth
Spirit Mountain has been a popular destination for winter skiing since opening in 1974. Opening day for the 2020-2021 season is slated to be November 27! Spirit Mountain Duluth stands as the second tallest ski hill in Minnesota, with a total vertical drop of 700 feet. Unfortunately, Spirit Mountain was closed for its other popular attraction – mountain biking – over the course of the summer. We’re looking forward to getting back out and supporting this fantastic addition to Duluth’s offerings this winter!
If you haven’t yet purchased your season pass to Spirit Mountain Duluth, you can still do so (though at full price). Season pass holders also get a few other fun perks throughout the year, which include Two $10 Bring a Friend Tickets and Two $10 Rental Packages, Snow Tubing Discounts, and 15% off Food at Skyline Cafe, Moosehead Saloon & Riverside Bar and Grill.
Single-day tickets can also be purchased as needed throughout the season if you’d rather keep your plans more flexible. This year, all tickets must be purchased in advance, and capacity limits on the slopes may apply, so it’s best to plan well in advance whenever possible. You can find all covid-related information for Spirit Mountain Duluth online.
Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding
Downhill skiing and snowboarding are the two most popular activities at Spirit Mountain Duluth. In total, there are 22 different ski runs, with something suitable for every level of experience. The longest run is an incredible 5400 feet, which means plenty of skiing and less standing around in line! There’s also night skiing available at Spirit Mountain, which is a truly magical experience.
Spirit Mountain Duluth is also home to a Terrain Park, which offers 4+ separate freestyle terrain areas located throughout the ski area and has been ranked as the #4 terrain park in the Midwest.
Downhill skiing and snowboarding aren’t the only activities to enjoy at Spirit Mountain Duluth this winter. There are also 2 distinct locations for nordic skiing. There’s the Upper Spirit Mountain Nordic Center, which offers some beautiful wooded cross country ski trails, as well as a double-tracked area and a skate lane. There is also the Grand Avenue Nordic Center, which offers snowmaking and world-class grooming for cross country skiers.
Just as with downhill skiing and snowboarding, there are rentals onsite and available for a little last-minute fun in Duluth!
Snow Tubing at Spirit Mountain
For even more hours of fun, consider joining us on Spirit Mountain for some snow tubing! It combines the best of your family sledding adventures of old, with the ease and convenience of being carried back to the top for endless hours of fun! There’s even a special glow-tubing event that usually takes place on Saturday nights – and we hope it makes a return for the 2020-2021 season!
Dining at Spirit Mountain Duluth
There are a number of places to grab a bit to eat at Spirit Mountain Duluth, but be aware that seating capacity inside is currently limited to 50%. Our favorite place to grab a bite to eat is at Moosehead Bar and Grill, which offers exceptional views of the Duluth area along with a full bar. It’s located at the Skyline Chalet, along with the Mountain Top Cafe.
At the Grand Avenue Chalet, which is especially perfect for Nordic Skiers, you’ll find the Riverside Bar and Grill, and the Grande Ave Cafe. All locations feature a variety of food options, kids menus, meal deals, and craft beers. All dining options are limited to 50% capacity in an effort to facilitate social distancing.
