This fall, if you’re looking for someplace quiet and small to get away and enjoy fall’s seasonal change of color, there’s nowhere better than our luxurious Bed and Breakfast, located near downtown Duluth. While you’re here, we recommend taking a ride on the North Shore Scenic Railroad, which has been safely operating this summer and will continue into fall. It’s one of the easiest and best ways to take in Minnesota Fall Colors along the beautiful shores of Lake Superior.
Minnesota’s fall colors will begin to change soon, and as they do they will transform the forests around Duluth with vibrant shades of red, yellow, and orange. Riding the North Shore Scenic Railroad is one way to enjoy it all, but it’s certainly not the only way to enjoy fall in Duluth. Here, there is plenty of hiking, biking, kayaking, birdwatching, and more to do, not to mention just relaxing and enjoying the colors in our own private and well-maintained gardens at the A.G. Thomson House. Book your room at our Duluth Bed and Breakfast, and get ready for a memorable fall getaway.
Your Trip on the North Shore Scenic Railroad
Riding along the North Shore Scenic Railroad in Duluth is a romantic throwback to a different era when trains were a main source of transportation between regions. Like many towns in the midwest, railroads were at the heart of Duluth’s development. Today, these historic trains travel down a 28-mile stretch of the old railroad that once dominated this area. The railroad offers numerous trips throughout the year, but our favorite is the fall colors tour, which travels up the lakeshore to the town of Two Harbors.
CNN has named the fall colors tour as one of the “Top 5 of the Top 10 in America!” As you travel along the North Shore Scenic Railroad, you’ll head deep in the heart of the Northwoods, where fall’s annual display of colors will be on full display. You can expect the trip to last around 6 hours, but that includes 2 hours for lunch in the town of Two Harbors. We recommend lunch at The Rustic Inn Cafe, Louise’s, or Black Woods Bar & Grill. While you’re there, you should also take the time to walk along the Sonju Trail on the waterfront.
Though the trip is beautiful on its own, you’ll also enjoy a fully-narrated tour, which will walk you through the history of the railroads that built this area, but also of Duluth itself and its busy harbor. It’s a great way to learn more about this area. The fall color tours aboard the North Shore Scenic Railroad start on September 17, 2020, and continues through October 11, 2020. Reservations are highly recommended in normal years, but especially so this year. To facilitate social distancing on the North Shore Scenic Railroad and to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and healthy trip this fall, there is limited capacity in the trains, with seats marked off for social distancing.
