Tettagouche State Park is a Winter Wonderland

Winter fun at Tettagouche State Park Near our Duluth Bed and BreakfastTettagouche State Park is a wonderful Minnesota State Park and absolutely one we recommend you visit at least once.  Most people make the trek – which is about an hour north of Duluth – during the summer and fall months.  But have you ever been to this extraordinary park in the winter? If not, you absolutely must go!

During the peak of summer and fall, you can expect to encounter miles of stunning hiking trails through Northwoods Sceery, dramatic views from the cliffs along the shores of Lake Superior, and a roaring 60-foot high waterfall on the Baptism River, which is certainly one of the many highlights of this beautiful park. But in the winter, the experience is transformed as the park turns into an icy and beautiful winter wonderland.

The park itself is worth the trip, but the scenic route along Highway 61/the North Shore Scenic Byway will do anything but disappoint.  This winter, join us for an adventure you won’t soon forget. Book your room at our Duluth Bed and Breakfast today!

Winter in Tettagouche State Park

Tettagouche State Park is a remnant of an old logging camp on the North Shore, and later a fishing camp and retreat for Duluth businessmen. It wasn’t until 1979 that Tettagouche became a part of the Minnesota State Park system, thus protecting this incredible geological area. The park is characterized by its rocky outcroppings, sweeping views of Lake Superior, the raging waters of the Baptism River, and resultant waterfalls, and of course the hiking trails throughout.

In the winter, Tettagouche turns into a veritable winter wonderland – and is well worth the trip north. The miles of hiking trails here are groomed into a delightful 15.5 mile-long network of cross country skiing trails that are rated as moderate to difficult. Snowshoers are also welcome to take to the park, as long as they stay off the groomed trails. Tettagouche State Park is also a popular area for snowmobilers, with 12 miles of trails available here, and which also connect up to other trails in the area. It’s part of the Silver Trail Riders trail system that connects Beaver Bay, Silver Bay, and Finland, and it provides a connection to the North Shore State Trail.

Perhaps one of the most dramatic highlights of Tettagouche State Park in the winter is High Falls on the Baptism River.  This waterfall is impressive when it’s full of rushing water, too, but in the winter, it freezes over and becomes a stunning sight to behold. Add that to the frozen and often icy views of the Lake Superior shoreline, and nothing beats a trip to this state park on a sunny winter day.  It’s one of the many reasons Tettagouche State Park has been listed as one of the 8 best Minnesota State Parks to visit in the winter!
