May 1st- May 3rd: 17th Annual Duluth Homegrown Music Festival

The Homegrown Music Festival is the annual community celebration showcasing the musical talent found in the Twin Ports. The festival features eight days of live music at over 30 venues, as well as locally produced poetry, video, and art presentations. The celebration culminates featuring 100+ bands at more than a dozen different venues in downtown Duluth. The festival features everything from a showcase of high school musicians to performances from internationally touring acts. From folk to rap to plain old “rawk and/or roll,” Homegrown is an authentically Duluth experience.

May 1st- May 31st: Erin M. Whight Art Show

Time: Atrium hours

Erin M. Whight is a self-taught artist, she refined her skills creating murals, trumpe l’oeil, scrimshaw drawings, and faux decorative painting under the guidance of Karen Ward—owner of Nantucket Decorative Painting, Nantucket, MA. Her passion lead her into numerous painting and drawing classes at the University of North Dakota. Opening Reception, May 4th at 5:00 pm. Held at Zeitgeist Arts, 222 East Superior Street.

May 9th: National Train Day
Time: 10:00 am
Celebrate the importance of Americas railroads on this annual holiday commemorating the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. The Lake Superior Railroad Museum and North Shore Scenic Railroad will be celebrating with Train Rides, Bounce Houses, Railroad Activities, Special Film presentations, as well as tours of trains you don’t always get to see. Museum admission is FREE for railroad museum members, and is discounted if you purchase train tickets.

May 14th: Guitarist/songwriter Pat Donohue and the Prairie All Stars
Time: 7:00 pm
Minnesota Public Radio is very happy to welcome Pat Donahue and the Prairie All Stars in concert. Pat is one of the most listened-to finger pickers in the world. As the guitarist for the Guys All-Star Shoe Band of Minnesota Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion. Tickets are $17.00 in advance/$15.00 for MPR members/$10.00 student discount tickets/$20.00 at the door. Held at Sacred Heart Music Center, 201 West 4th Street.

May 23rd- May 24th: Battle of the Jug Bands
Time: 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
The 19th annual Battle of the Jug Bands will feature six to ten regional bands playing music with jugs for the chance to win the coveted Krumkake Iron, a Norwegian waffle iron used by jug bands as a clacker. Held at Amazing Grace Bakery & Cafe.

May 30th: Bent Paddle’s Festiversary
Time: 2:00 pm- 8:00 pm
Outdoor Brewery Festival with live music, special beers & casks, food trucks, activities, and revelry $10 Gate Admission includes commemorative glass & 1st beer is free!/$5.00 Under 21 or Designated Driver/Kids 12 & Under are Free. Outdoor lot of the Bent Paddle Brewing Co., 1912 West Michigan Street in Duluth.
